A large number of CNC turning and milling combined processing production methods are characterized by scattered processes and organized flow production according to the rhythm, which is a rigid production automation. With the development of technology, the variety of products continues to increase and the batch size decreases, the complexity of the product structure is significantly increased, and the customers’ requirements for product quality are becoming more and more stringent, which puts forward more and more urgent needs for the flexibility of the production process.

The biggest difference between turning and milling is that the workpiece rotates and the tool moves during turning; while the workpiece does not move during milling, the tool rotates and moves. This brings a certain degree of difficulty to the intensive process. For example, a pair of car universal joints as shown in Figure 1 belong to revolving parts, but in addition to turning processing, more than 10 different processes such as milling, drilling, reaming, and tooth profile processing are required. Especially for tooth profile machining, it is necessary to maintain a strict relationship between the movement of the workpiece and the tool, that is, multi-coordinate linkage. In addition, since multiple tools must be used, it is also necessary to consider how to replace the tools. Under normal circumstances, the turret is used to replace the turning tools, and the tool magazine and manipulators are used to replace the milling tools.

It can also perform joint movement of multiple coordinates to process messy space surfaces. Vertical CNC machining usually does not have a turntable, only the top surface is processed. In addition, there are compound CNC machining with vertical and horizontal spindles, and vertical and horizontal adjustable CNC machining with the spindles that can be adjusted to a horizontal axis or a vertical axis. They can process the workpiece on five sides.
